30th Special Troops Battalion – North Carolina Army National Guard
Durham
SGT Sarah Jones continues to serve with the 30th Special Troops Battalion of the North Carolina Army National Guard. She is scheduled to be mobilized to federal service in the late fall of 2008 and will be deploying to Iraq in early 2009. Her husband, who was also an Army Reservist and a Vietnam veteran, died of cancer in Spring of 2008. He served with the 108th Army Reserve Unit based in Salisbury. The death of her husband and time away from home while training for deployment has presented unique challenges. The North Carolina Heroes Fund was very pleased to be able to help SGT Jones prepare to deploy without the burden of financial worries.

Christian’s father, SSG Ronald Richerson, was killed in action in 1993, when Christian was just two years old. Looking to begin a career in the Army like his father, he has been accepted into the Virginia Military Institute. The military tradition in the family does not end with Christian’s father, as his mother, and stepfather, SGT Thomas Latham a chaplain stationed at Ft. Bragg all served in the US Army. The North Carolina Heroes Fund is pleased to honor his father’s ultimate sacrifice to our country by awarding him a partial scholarship to VMI.
